RUTHERFORD APPELLATION WINERIES DONATE $10,000 TO THE
RUTHERFORD GRANGE RESTORATION PROJECT
Biannual Rutherford Passport Weekends Raise Funds to Benefit Local Non-profits

Rutherford, CA – Representatives from the Rutherford Appellation Wineries and Rutherford Dust Society presented the Rutherford Grange with a $10,000 donation to support the Grange’s significant restoration project, including repairs to the building interior structure, exterior façade and community event revitalization. The majority of the donation will be designated specifically to build a marquee in front of the Grange which will showcase events and programs that are scheduled in the facility and throughout the Rutherford region. The Rutherford Appellation Wineries host biannual consumer wine events – Passport Weekends – to raise funds for the local community. The recent partnership between the Rutherford Appellation Wineries and the Rutherford Grange is a natural fit as both organizations strive to educate consumers about the Rutherford wine growing region and invite them to visit and enjoy winery and community events.

“It’s a great idea”, said Susan Hirschy, Grange Master, about adding a marquee along Highway 29.  ” We should have the major repairs done this spring and into early summer in no small part because of this donation. We are honored in their (Rutherford Appellation Wineries) belief in the Grange mandates and our plans for the Rutherford Grange.”

The Rutherford Grange was established in 1914 after a Charter fundraiser was held to raise $10 needed to purchase the land. Within two years, the Grange was built and dedicated to the agricultural community of the Rutherford area. Granges were established in 1867, just after the Civil War when the federal, state and local governments were restructuring their collective functionality. It was the most powerful private organization that helped push agricultural legislation through to the 1960’s, after which Grange memberships began to decline. Granges also were established to enable women to hold greater leadership positions, to hold public events including fundraisers, socials and dances, and provide meals for farm workers.

Since its inception, the Rutherford Appellation Wineries has donated more than $20,000 to local charities from Passport Weekend ticket sales, including the Rutherford Grange, the Rutherford River Restoration project, Queen of the Valley Community Outreach Service and the Rutherford Volunteer Fire Department.

On May 1-2, 2010, the Rutherford Appellation Wineries is proud to present its third annual Spring Passport Weekend featuring Tapas and Tastings. A portion of event ticket proceeds will again be designated to support local non-profit organizations. This spring’s 17 participating Rutherford wineries will host the special Tapas & Tasting event on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Weekend passports are available for $65 per person or $50 for a SUNDAY ONLY pass.  Tickets can be purchased at www.rutherford-appellation-wineries.com.

Rutherford Passport Weekends are held the first weekends of May and December. To learn more about the Rutherford Appellation Wineries please visit www.rutherford-appellation-wineries.com.

About Rutherford Appellation Wineries
Rutherford Appellation Wineries was established as the direct to consumer marketing arm of the Rutherford Dust Society (www.rutherforddust.org) to educate the public about the significance of the Rutherford appellation as Napa Valley's preeminent grape-growing area. This consumer-focused organization was created to promote the uniqueness of the area and encourage visitors to experience personally the quality of the wines produced in this special place.
